Meet one of the candidates, Izzy, running for Student Government Parliamentarian!

Izzy Sora ‘29 (she/her)

Major: Government & Law

Describe your vision for the position you intend to run for.

I see the Parliamentarian as someone who is willing to speak up when something does not follow the rules, even when it is uncomfortable to do so. My goal would be to make sure Student Government is a place where the Constitution and Bylaws actually guide our decisions, rather than documents we only look at when there is a problem. I want to bring consistency and accountability to the position. If a proposed action or amendment raises a constitutional question, I would take the time to understand the issue, look at the language of our governing documents, and make sure the decision is based on the rules rather than on who is involved. I also want students to feel that these processes are understandable and fair, especially when disagreements happen. At the same time, I do not think enforcing the Constitution should mean being unwilling to change it. If our Bylaws or Constitution no longer reflect what Student Government needs, I want to help make sure those changes are seriously considered and clearly written. Student Government should follow its own rules, be willing to question itself, and have a Parliamentarian who is not afraid to hold it to that standard.

Describe why you are the right person for this role.

I believe I am the right person for Parliamentarian because I am not afraid to speak my mind, ask difficult questions, or play devil’s advocate when I think something deserves a second look. I would never want to simply go along with the majority because it is easier. I want to be someone who can step back, look at an issue objectively, and ask whether we are actually being fair and following the rules. I also think my experience at Lafayette has given me a perspective that I can bring to this role.I have had conversations with people who may not always feel comfortable speaking up in the same spaces I do, and I think that has made me more aware of how differently students can experience the same campus. Whether it be in classes, clubs, my jobs on campus, I try to listen before making assumptions, and I think that matters for a position that is supposed to make sure everyone is being treated fairly. Most importantly, I am willing to put in the work. I would take this position seriously and dedicate myself to understanding the Constitution and Bylaws, staying informed, and being prepared to speak up when necessary. I want Lafayette to be a place where students are treated fairly and where everyone has a genuine opportunity to have their voice heard. I would bring that mindset, along with consistency, honesty, and a willingness to challenge my own side, to the role of Parliamentarian.
