Meet one of the candidates, Gwyn, running for Student Government Treasurer!

Gwyn Horn ’29 (she/her)

Major: Psychology

Describe your vision for the position you intend to run for.

My vision as Treasurer is to build upon the foundation Gracie has established while creating a more collaborative and consistently involved Budget Committee. Having served on the committee for two semesters, I’ve gained an appreciation for the time, responsibility, and careful consideration that goes into allocating funds equitably. I believe leadership means recognizing what already works while identifying areas for growth. If elected, I would focus on extending committee involvement beyond the major Period A and B budgeting processes. During these periods, we work together to review requests and make decisions, and I’ve seen firsthand how valuable everyone’s input can be. I want to carry that same collaboration into our weekly budget meetings and Friday appeal office hours. One initiative I’d like to explore is creating a centralized communication system, such as an OurCampus form or shared Student Government email, where student organizations can submit questions and requests that the entire committee can access. This would allow members to take greater ownership of reviewing requests, preparing responses, and engaging directly with organizations rather than communication falling primarily on the Treasurer. I believe this would streamline communication, encourage diverse perspectives, and potentially provide organizations with quicker, more consistent responses. It would also create a more approachable environment where organizations feel comfortable voicing concerns and confident that their requests receive thoughtful consideration. Ultimately, I hope to preserve the fairness of our budgeting process while strengthening the shared responsibility that makes a committee effective.

Describe why you are the right person for this role.

I believe I am the right person for this role because after serving two semesters on the budget committee working under Gracie, I have gained valuable firsthand experience with the responsibilities and challenges that come with allocating student organization funding. My time in the budget committee has allowed me to develop a stronger understanding of our guidelines and the importance of balancing individual organizations’ needs to the fairness of the student body and our limited budget as a whole. Beyond my experience, I believe my reliability and my willingness to take initiative would make me an effective treasurer. My empathetic nature and respect for others are also qualities I would bring to the position. While we cannot always approve every request, I will always choose to hear each organization out to the fullest extent and help guide them to success in whatever way I can! I recognize how much time and effort goes into planning events and activities and how important funding can be to clubs success. I also understand that being a treasurer requires more than understanding a budgeting process. It requires strong communication, organization, and the ability to lead a committee while remaining open to different and opposing perspectives. I feel confident in respectfully questioning decisions, listening to others, and taking responsibility for my commitments. Having experienced the budget committee as a member, I feel prepared to take on a greater leadership role while continuing to learn from those around me.
